Kick-offs and choosing ends

Bucksimp

Vital 1st Team Regular
Get ready for a yawn fest.

We rarely seem to kick towards the Rilmac Stand in the first half. Is this down to random chance with the opposition invariably winning the toss and choosing ends which seems unlikely, or is it part of 'the method'.
What do we reckon?

I don't think it really matters as we don't have a home end as such and the 617 are next to the away fans so they do their bit to counter any perceived advantage when the away side are kicking towards the SW.

There may be something in the angle of the low winter sun and underfoot conditions when the temperature drops during the bleak midwinter?

The little known FA Rule 57c iv, states that "(Home) Clubs shall designate ahead of each season which half of the field they use for pre-match preparations. They shall remain/defend there for the first half half, with the team chosen to kick-off by the referee tossing off. This shall have the effect of a very prompt match commencement, minimising (goal-keeper in particular), player fatigue from changing ends along with photographers and fans at unsegregated games. Sunglasses, caps and other aids in relation to the alignment of the sun are not permitted except for the designated goalkeepers. Any club seeking an advantage for example by watering , forking or cutting the grass differently for each half will be subject to a slap on the wrist ("big clubs") or points deductions"

And there was me thinking it was all covered in Law 8.

It may not matter, but it can't be random.
Can't say it's always been like it. Just be interesting to know if there is an instruction.
Maybe it's to mitigate against the effects of the curse of the Imp or something scientific like that.

Are there rules about watering the pitch before & at half time? It sure gave Portsmouth an advantage when Mandroiu ended up on his arse when taking that penalty.

From the EFL Handbook:

'The Home Club may water the pitch and/or carry out any remedial or repair work to the pitch at half time provided that it gives reasonable notice to the referee and the other Club that it intends to do so and that any such watering and/or remedial or repair work is carried out evenly over the entire length and width of the pitch.'
